1 DANAU TOBA, SUMATARA UTARA
Danau Toba sejak lama menjadi daerah tujuan wisata penting di Sumatera Utara selain Bukit Lawang dan Nias, menarik wisatawan domestik maupun mancanegara.
Danau Toba adalah sebuah danau vulkanik dengan ukuran panjang 100 kilometer dan lebar 30 kilometer yang terletak di Provinsi Sumatera Utara, Indonesia. Danau ini merupakan danau terbesar di Indonesia dan Asia Tenggara. Di tengah danau ini terdapat sebuah pulau vulkanik bernama Pulau Samosir.
Diperkirakan Danau Toba terjadi saat ledakan sekitar 73.000-75.000 tahun yang lalu dan merupakan letusan supervolcano (gunung berapi super) yang paling baru. Bill Rose dan Craig Chesner dari Michigan Technological University memperkirakan bahwa bahan-bahan vulkanik yang dimuntahkan gunung itu sebanyak 2.800 km³, dengan 800 km³ batuan ignimbrit dan 2.000 km³ abu vulkanik yang diperkirakan tertiup angin ke barat selama 2 minggu. Debu vulkanik yang ditiup angin telah menyebar ke separuh bumi, dari Cina sampai ke Afrika Selatan. Letusannya terjadi selama 1 minggu dan lontaran debunya mencapai 10 km di

Setelah letusan tersebut, terbentuk kaldera yang kemudian terisi oleh air dan menjadi yang sekarang dikenal sebagai Danau Toba. Tekanan ke atas oleh magma yang belum keluar menyebabkan munculnya Pulau Samosi
Tim peneliti multidisiplin internasional, yang dipimpin oleh Dr. Michael Petraglia, mengungkapkan dalam suatu konferensi pers di Oxford, Amerika Serikat bahwa telah ditemukan situs arkeologi baru yang cukup spektakuler oleh para ahli geologi di selatan dan utara India. Di situs itu terungkap bagaimana orang bertahan hidup, sebelum dan sesudah letusan gunung berapi (supervolcano) Toba pada 74.000 tahun yang lalu, dan bukti tentang adanya kehidupan di bawah timbunan abu Gunung Toba. Padahal sumber letusan berjarak 3.000 mil, dari sebaran abunya.
Selama tujuh tahun, para ahli dari oxford University tersebut meneliti projek ekosistem di India, untuk mencari bukti adanya kehidupan dan peralatan hidup yang mereka tinggalkan di padang yang gundul. Daerah dengan luas ribuan hektare ini ternyata hanya sabana (padang rumput). Sementara tulang belulang hewan berserakan. Tim menyimpulkan, daerah yang cukup luas ini ternyata ditutupi debu dari letusan gunung berapi purba.
Penyebaran debu gunung berapi itu sangat luas, ditemukan hampir di seluruh dunia. Berasal dari sebuah erruption supervolcano purba, yaitu Gunung Toba.Dugaan mengarah ke Gunung Toba, karena ditemukan bukti bentuk molekul debu vulkanik yang sama di 2100 titik. Sejak kaldera kawah yang kini jadi danau Toba di Indonesia, hingga 3000 mil, dari sumber letusan. Bahkan yang cukup mengejutkan, ternyata penyebaran debu itu sampai terekam hingga Kutub Utara. Hal ini mengingatkan para ahli, betapa dahsyatnya letusan super gunung berapi Toba kala itu. Bukti-bukti yang ditemukan, memperkuat dugaan, bahwa kekuatan letusan dan gelombang lautnya sempat memusnahkan kehidupan di Atlantis.

2. DANAU KELIMUTU,NTT ( NUSA TENGGARA TIMUR )
Danau ini dikenal dengan tiga warna, yaitu merah, biru, dan putih. Walaupun begitu, warna-warna tersebut selalu berubah-ubah seiring dengan perjalanan waktu. Sekarang saja, dua warna dari ketiga danau itu adalah coklat, sedangkan yang lain adalah hijau. Kelimutu merupakan gabungan kata dari Keli yang berarti gunung dan kata Mutu yang berarti mendidih. Menurut kepercayaan penduduk setempat, warna-warna pada danau Kelimutu memiliki arti masing-masing dan memiliki kekuatan alam yang sangat dahsyat.
Danau atau Tiwu Kelimutu di bagi atas tiga bagian yang sesuai dengan warna – warna yang ada di dalam danau. Danau berwarna biru atau Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai merupakan tempat berkumpulnya jiwa-jiwa muda-mudi yang telah meninggal Danau yang berwarna merah atau Tiwu Ata Polo merupakan tempat berkumpulnya jiwa-jiwa orang yang telah meninggal dan selama ia hidup selalu melakukan kejahatan/tenung. Sedangkan danau berwarna putih atau Tiwu Ata Mbupu merupakan tempat berkumpulnya jiwa-jiwa orang tua yang telah meninggal. Pagi hari adalah waktu yang terbaik untuk menyaksikan keindahan danau Kelimutu. Sedangkan menjelang tengah hari, apalagi sore hari, biasanya pemandangan danau Kelimutu akan terhalang oleh kabut yang tebal.

3. DANAU SENTANI, PAPUA
Danau Sentani adalah salah satu danau terbesar di Papua. Luasnya 9.360 hektar dan berada di ketinggian 75 meter di atas permukaan laut (dpl). Kawasan wisata ini kaya akan keanekaragaman biota laut dan hewan-hewan endemik khas Papua.
Salah satu yang menarik di Danau Sentani adalah keberadaan hiu gergaji (Pristis microdon). Namanya hiu gergaji karena giginya berderet dan pastinya amat tajam. Hiu ini dikenal juga dengan nama ‘hiu sentani’ karena hanya ada di lokasi ini.
Danau Sentani kaya akan beragam biota laut. Oleh karena itu, Danau Sentani dijadikan lokasi wisata untuk berenang, bersampan, menyelam, memancing, juga ski air.
Satu jenis ikan yang juga menarik untuk diketahui adalah ikan gabus asli yang jumlahnya merosot tajam dan semakin langka. Hal ini bukan diakibatkan masyarakat setempat yang mengkonsumsi ikan ini (rasanya enak loh, manis dan lezat) tapi rupanya telur-telur ikan gabus Sentani menjadi makanan ikan gabus Toraja.
Kampung-kampung (Ondoafi) di sekitar Danau Sentani layak kita kunjungi bukan hanya karena masakan ikan gabusnya yang lezat tapi juga aktivitas sehari-harinya yang menarik untuk disimak.
Mereka biasa membuat lukisan dan baju dari kulit kayu (Pulau Ayapo), memahat ukiran kayu Papua yang terkenal itu, menanam sayuran di tengah danau, hingga kebiasaan menyelam sambil merokok.
Kebiasaan yang terakhir terdengar aneh ya. Menyelam sambil merokok? Apa rokoknya tidak basah? Nah ini yang menarik. Masyarakat Sentani tidak merokok seperti orang-orang lain yang biasa kita lihat.
Bara rokok yang menyala mereka masukkan ke dalam mulut. Hal ini dilakukan supaya hawa panas dari bara rokok menghangatkan tubuh mereka sewaktu menyelam. Kalau sudah naik ke permukaan, rokok kembali dihisap seperti biasa. Tapi hindari mencoba-coba rokok ya, karena tidak baik untuk kesehatan.
Kalau kamu mau mengunjungi danau ini cobalah datang pada pertengahan bulan Juni ketika Festival Danau Sentani diadakan. Kamu akan terkesima dengan tarian-tarian adat di atas perahu, tarian perang khas Papua, upacara adat seperti penobatan Ondoafi, dll. Tempat wisata lain yang bisa dikunjungi adalah Tugu Jenderal Douglas McArthur, pemimpin tentara Sekutu asal Amerika dari masa Perang Dunia II

4. DANAU BATUR, BALI
Kawasan Gunung Batur terkenal sebagai obyek wisata andalan Kabupaten Bangli. Konon menurut cerita dalam Lontar Susana Bali, Gunung Batur merupakan puncak dari Gunung Mahameru yang dipindahkan Batara Pasupati untuik dijadikan Sthana Betari Danuh (istana Dewi Danu). Pada waktu tertentu, seluruh umatHindu dari berbagai daerah di Bali datang ke Batur menghaturkan Suwinih untuk mengusir bencana hama yang menimpa ladang mereka. Dengan menghantarkan suminih ini maka kawasan gunung Batur menjadi daerah yang subur.
Daerah yang dapat ditonjolkan sebagai obyek wisata adalah kawah, kaldera dan danau. Terdapat aliran air dalam tanah yang mengalirkan air Danau Batur, yang muncul menjadi mata air di beberapa tempat di Bali dan dianggap sebagai “Tirta Suci”
Wisata budaya yang terdapat di kawasan Gunung Batur adalah Trunyan. Meskipun seluruh penduduk Trunyan beragama Hindu seperti umumnya masyarakat Bali, mereka menyatakan bahwa Hindu Trunyan merupakan Hindu asli warisan kerajaan Majapahit. Di sebelah utara Trunyan terdapat kuban, sebuah tempat makam desa, namun jenazah tidak dikuburkan atau dibakar, melainkan diletakkan di bawah pohon setelah dilakukan upacara kematian yang rumit. Tempat pemakamanan ini dipenuhi oleh tulang-tulang, dan bisa jadi kita menemukan mayat yang masih baru.

5. DANAU MANINJAU, SUMATRA BARAT
Danau Maninjau adalah sebuah danau di kecamatan Tanjung Raya, Kabupaten Agam, provinsi Sumatra Barat, Indonesia. Danau ini terletak sekitar 140 kilometer sebelah utara Kota Padang, ibukota Sumatera Barat, 36 kilometer dari Bukittinggi, 27 kilometer dari Lubuk Basung, ibukota Kabupaten Agam.
Maninjau yang merupakan danau vulkanik ini berada di ketinggian 461,50 meter di atas permukaan laut. Luas Maninjau sekitar 99,5 km² dan memiliki kedalaman maksimum 495 meter. Cekungannya terbentuk karena letusan gunung yang bernama Sitinjau (menurut legenda setempat), hal ini dapat terlihat dari bentuk bukit sekeliling danau yang menyerupai seperti dinding. Menurut legenda di Ranah Minang, keberadaan Danau Maninjau berkaitan erat dengan kisah Bujang Sembilan.
Danau Maninjau merupakan sumber air untuk sungai bernama Batang Sri Antokan. Di salah satu bagian danau yang merupakan hulu dari Batang Sri Antokan terdapat PLTA Maninjau. Puncak tertinggi diperbukitan sekitar Danau Maninjau dikenal dengan nama Puncak Lawang. Untuk bisa mencapai Danau Maninjau jika dari arah Bukittinggi maka akan melewati jalan berkelok-kelok yang dikenal dengan Kelok 44 sepanjang kurang lebih 10 km mulai dari Ambun Pagi sampai ke Maninjau.
Danau ini tercatat sebagai danau terluas kesebelas di Indonesia. Sedangkan di Sumatera Barat, Maninjau merupakan danau terluas kedua setelah Danau Singkarak yang memiliki luas 129,69 km² yang berada di dua kabupaten yaitu Kabupaten Tanah Datar dan Kabupaten Solok. Di sekitar Danau Maninjau terdapat fasilitas wisata, seperti Hotel(Maninjau Indah Hotel, Pasir Panjang Permai) serta penginapan dan restoran.
